35 Years of Internet

An article in the local newspaper (How the Net has changed our lives Peter Birnie. The Vancouver Sun. Vancouver, B.C.: Sep 4, 2004. pg. C.1.Front) outlined 35 ways how the internet has changed society after it quietly infiltrated our lives since 1969 when a couple of computer geeks hooked two computers together to communicate with each other.

But consider also how it has changed how humans communicate and care for one another. Face-to-face communication has diminished while communication
through the mask of the Internet (i.e. cheap long-distance, email, instant messaging, text messaging) has increased markedly in volume. Has this been accompanied by an increase in the quality of communications or increase in the compassion of our society? I think we are better informed but unfortunately, this has not led to an increase in more civilized or compassionate behavior (e.g. pornography, particularly involving children, is one Internet's fastest growing industries).

Has life improved in 35 years, or not??
